E. Puchnarewicz, Znaczenie wielokulturowości w turystyce u progu XXI wieku, w: E. Puchnarewicz (red.), „Wielokulturowość w turystyce”, Wyższa Szkoła Turystyki i Języków Obcych, Wyd. Libron, Kraków 2010, s. 15-33.

The author examines the role of multiculturalism in tourism at the beginning of XXI century. Multiculturalism is understood in two ways – as the state or condition of being multiculturaland as the preservation of different cultures or cultural identities within a unifed society. The connection between tourism and multiculturality has been shown in the light of asymmetric conditions of the socio-cultural development of northern and southern parts of the world. The clash of civilizations has its source in unequal economic conditions of the human life and fear of domination of postmodern societies over traditional norms and symbols of semi-developed world. The author distinguishes that a tourist’s relations with local inhabitants depend on the form of organization of their peregrination. Mass-tourism is isolated from cultural communication with native people, and individual, or small group travels engaged in human tourism. She examines cultural mediators and how they help tourists appreciate foreign cultures. The author also shows how tourists experiences are strategically crafted by mediators. In conclusion she considers what role tourism should play in multicultural contemporary world.
